BOSTON – Seven students from Boston-area colleges are cycling across America, stopping in many rural towns to get kids interested in science through hands-on workshops.
The project called Spokes brings together students from Harvard University and MIT on a trip that’s an endurance challenge, road trip and teaching experience. The 4,000-mile route includes a dozen stops to host workshops that let youths in the area launch model rockets, build robots and program computers.
Since it started in 2013, the project has targeted communities where schools might not have resources for flashy science experiments. The group says it wants to inspire students to think about careers in science.
The group left from Washington, D.C., on June 1 and finishes in California on Aug. 9.
