Air Canada has apologized after footage showing baggage handlers dropping gate-checked luggage 20 feet from the top of the jetway went viral.
The online video of two baggage handlers dropping passengers’ bags will cost them their jobs, the airline says.
“The employees involved have been advised that their employment will be terminated pending the outcome of our investigation,” Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said to The Toronto Star.
The video was posted on YouTube on April 17 by passenger Dwayne Stewart, who filmed the incident at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on Thursday as he sat waiting to fly home to Vancouver.
“We were so shocked we had to laugh … it looked comical, it looked like it wasn’t real,” he told CBC News.
“I understand why they’d do that, from a workplace safety point of view, but that doesn’t help passengers whose baggage they don’t want to have treated in that fashion,” he added.
The video has been viewed over 1.7 million times on YouTube.
